Art1 Sf "angeborene Eigentümlichkeit, Natur, Herkunft, Art und Weise" std. (12. Jh.), mhd. art m./f., mndd. art f Stammwort. Das Wort kann altererbt sein, doch ist auffällig, daß es in früherer Zeit unbelegt ist und erst später allgemein verbreitet wird. Falls es alt ist, ist im germanischen Bereich zu vergleichen ae. eard (ebenfalls selten), mndl. aert "Lage, Art", anord. einarđr "einfach, aufrichtig" ("von einfacher Art"); außergermanisch ist am ehesten ein Wurzelnomen * ar(ə)t- "Fügung" (zu dem unter Arm behandelten * arə- "fügen") anzusetzen, das auch in anderen Sprachen nur in Relikten und Weiterbildungen vergleichbar ist: gr. árti "gerade, eben", gr. ártios "angemessen, richtig, bereit", gr. artízein "ordnen, einrichten"; arm. ard "soeben, jetzt"; lit. artùs "nahe" u.a. Ein Anschluß an Art2 ist aber nicht ausgeschlossen (vgl. ahd. artōn "wohnen" ?). Vermutlich eine Zusammenbildung ist abartig; vermutlich eine Präfixableitung entarten; Partikelableitungen: ab-, ausarten.

Art2 Sf (in Zusammensetzungen wie Artacker, Artzaun usw.) per. Wortschatz arch. (12. Jh.), mhd. art "das Ackern, Ackerbau", as. ard "Aufenthaltsort" Stammwort. Aus g. * ardi- f. "das Ackern", auch in anord. ƍrđ, ae. eard (auch "Aufenthaltsort, Heimat" usw.). ti-Abstraktum zu dem alten Verbum für "pflügen" g. * ar-ja- in gt. arjan, ahd. erren; aus ig. (eur.) * arə- in l. arāre, mir. airid, lit. árti, akslav. orati, gr. aroũn.

Art3 Sf (in Wendungen wie Pop Art) "Kunst" per. Wortschatz fach. phras. (20. Jh.) Entlehnung. Entlehnt als Bestandteil (amerikanisch) englischer Bezeichnungen wie ne. Pop Art (aus popular art "volkstümliche Kunst", vielleicht mit bewußter Anspielung auf ne. pop "Knall, Knüller"). Diese Bezeichnungsweise ist im (amerikanischen) Englischen sehr beliebt und hat auch kontinentale Nachahmer, so daß sie als Internationalismus aufgefaßt werden kann.
